This tunnel was opended in 1805 as a small bore tramway tunnel at the north end of the horse operated Lancaster Canal Tramroad. The tramway operated until 1862 in Preston having passed into the hands of the Bolton and Preston Railway in around 1840. The B&P initially internded to use it as an alternative mainline route into Preston. The tunnel was later widened to became the access to the L&Y's Butler Street goods yard. It is now, as with half the UK's railways, a carpark.
