Highgate West (Down) 332yds,
The sleepers and rail-chairs remain in situ throughout the tunnel. The north end of this bore was bombed during WWII; the damaged section being replaced tube-style with precast iron sections forming a circular profile. The outside facing wall was rebuilt using concrete pic here (scroll down). Highgate Wood sidings still run to the north portal of the tunnel, the depot is to the North. highgate_w_d_01s.jpg highgate_w_d_02s.jpg highgate_w_d_03s.jpg

Highgate West (Up) 332yds,
The door at the station end of this bore is permanently sealed. Watch out for the barbed wire at face level just inside the portal which is difficult to see in the dark and perfectly positioned to tear your nose off! The north end has a double wall which excludes all light but allows access. I assume this is for the benefit of the resident bat population! The last pic shows the cross connection. highgate_w_u_01s.jpg highgate_w_u_02s.jpg highgate_w_u_03s.jpg
