The tunnel is on the branch to Cauldon Lowe quarries that closed around 1980. The track slopes down east to west so the west end is under a foot or more of water. The entire west end outside the tunnel is a quagmire.

John is balanced on the rail (left foot) and a brick (right foot) to keep his wellies above the water! He is turning around to come back for a stick to help keep his balance. He then walked on the rail to the other end for a photo. I did exactly the same several years ago so didn't need to 'do' the tunnel. Instead I watched and videoed John in the hope that he fell in. Unfortunately, he didn't! The orange (iron oxide) mud is over a foot deep in places - enough to tip over the top of the average welly! when you get to the water there is a foot of water and a foot of mud.
